Gonorrhea --The Disease

A common sexually transmitted disease (STD), gonorrhea is caused by bacteria known as Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The bacteria can grow in moist areas of the reproductive tract and the urethra, and can be spread in the following ways:

  • Vaginal sex
  • Anal sex
  • Oral sex
  • From mother to baby during a vaginal delivery.

Symptoms in men may include:

  • White, yellow, or green pus from the penis with pain
  • Burning sensations during urination
  • Swollen testicles.

Symptoms in women may include:

  • Bleeding associated with vaginal intercourse
  • Painful or burning sensations when urinating
  • Yellow or bloody vaginal discharge.

Antibiotics are generally used to treat gonorrhea; although medication will stop the infection, it will not repair any permanent damage that has occurred as a result.
